Choosing your first motorcycle is an exciting step in your motorcycling career. The right model can make a world of difference. But where do you start? The range is vast and the choices seem endless. Do you go for a cool naked bike, a comfortable touring bike or still that fast sports bike? And what about your budget and additional costs? Here's what you need to know to buy your first motorcycle with confidence.

Determine your budget

Buying a motorcycle is a great investment in freedom and adventure, but it's smart to set your budget in advance. In addition to the price of the motorcycle itself, there are additional costs you need to consider.

  • Cost of new engine: a new motorcycle quickly costs between €5,000 and €10,000 or more, depending on the make and model.
  • Cost of used motorcycle: for a good used car, you can count on prices starting at €2,500, but again the type of engine and mileage play a big role.
  • Additional costs: Don't forget that you also need money for a helmet, protective gear, gloves, boots and a good motorcycle jacket. This can quickly add up to €1,000 or more.
  • Insurance: depending on your coverage (WA, limited casco or all-risk) and age, you can expect premiums from €20 to €100 per month.
  • Maintenance: regular maintenance, such as a tire change or oil change, costs an average of €200 to €500 per year.
  • Fuel: depending on your driving style and usage, but allow for regular refueling, especially on long trips.

Tip: Set up a buffer for unexpected expenses, such as repairs or new tires. That way you won't have any surprises and you can continue to enjoy every ride.

What to look out for when buying your first motorcycle?

As a beginner, it is important to choose a motorcycle that suits your experience and riding style. Consider the following points:

  • Weight and balance: The lighter the bike, the easier it is to handle. A heavy motorcycle can be overwhelming, especially if you are just starting out.
  • Seat height: You should be able to reach the ground comfortably with both feet. This gives you more control, especially when standing still or riding slowly.
  • Driving performance: Choose an engine with predictable handling and smooth throttle response. Avoid models that accelerate too aggressively.
  • Reliability: Above all, your first motorcycle should run trouble-free. Look for motorcycles with a good reputation for maintenance and durability. You want to spend time on the road and not in the workshop, of course.

How many cc on your first bike?

An engine's displacement, or cc (cubic centimeters), determines how much power an engine has. Don't start too big and choose a motorcycle that fits your license and experience.

  • 125cc: Ideal for beginners with an A1 license. These motorcycles are light and agile.
  • 300-400cc: For A2 riders. They offer a good balance between power and controllability.
  • 500-650cc: Suitable for more confident beginners who already have some experience. These motors are more powerful and heavier, making them less suitable for absolute beginners.

Tip: Start small and build up your skills. Later you can always upgrade to a more powerful model.

What type of motorcycle suits you?

There are different types of motorcycles, each with its own riding style and look. We list the most popular options for beginners:

  • Naked bike: a versatile and popular choice. These motorcycles are agile, relatively light and have a relaxed riding position. Perfect for commuting and weekend rides.
  • Sport bike: looks spectacular and offers impressive performance. Note that sport bikes are often less comfortable on long rides due to the sporty riding position.
  • Allroad/adventure: ideal if you dream of adventurous rides, even off the beaten track. These bikes are comfortable and have higher handlebars, but tend to be a bit heavier.
  • Cruiser: think of a low seating position and a relaxed riding style. Cruisers are often loved for their tough looks and comfortable rides.

Think about how you want to use the bike primarily: short rides around town, long road trips or perhaps off-road adventure? Try out different types during riding lessons or test rides to experience what suits you well.

New or used?

Another choice you will face when buying your first motorcycle: will you go for a brand new motorcycle or a reliable used one? Both options have their own advantages.

Benefits of a new engine:

  • Warranty: a new engine often comes with a two-year warranty, covering unexpected repair costs.
  • Latest technology: think modern safety systems such as ABS, traction control and driving modes.
  • No hidden defects: you know exactly what you're getting and you don't have to worry about previous damage.

Advantages of a used motorcycle (occasion):

  • Cheaper to buy: occasions are often much cheaper, giving you more choice within your budget.
  • Lower depreciation: a used motorcycle has already had its greatest loss of value, so you lose less if you sell it again later.
  • Immediately available: with a good deal, you can usually hit the road right away without long delivery times.

Tip: Buying a used motorcycle? Check the maintenance history, mileage and wear of tires, brakes and chain. If necessary, have the motorcycle inspected at a garage.
