Winter conditions require a different approach than normal. Think slippery roads, low temperatures and extra attention to your motorcycle maintenance. Discover practical tips for riding safely, comfortably and with pleasure through the winter. For the real diehards for whom the motorcycle season never really stops.
Adjust your driving style
Whereas in the summer you might be smooth through turns or accelerate briskly, in the winter that is often a recipe for trouble. Slick roads due to frost or snow can be treacherous, even if they look safe at first glance.
A few tips:
- Keep more distance than usual.
- Brake gradually and avoid abrupt movements with your handlebars.
- Curves? Take them with caution and lean a little less to avoid losing grip.
- Adjust your speed. By adjusting your speed and driving with anticipation, you not only ensure your own safety, but also prevent damage to your motorcycle.
Pay attention to the road surface
In winter, road surfaces can be full of surprises. Think of black ice, wet leaves, or snow residue causing slipperiness. Even if the road looks dry, there may still be frost in shady areas. It is therefore important to stay constantly alert and scan the road surface carefully during your drive.
Preferably choose roads that are well maintained and less likely to have unexpected slippery spots, such as main roads. Avoid abrupt braking or steering in places where you are in doubt about grip. When in doubt, it is better to reduce your speed and continue driving as smoothly as possible. Relying on your tires is good, but don't underestimate the impact of winter conditions.
Warm rugs
The cold can quickly ruin your ride if you are not properly prepared. Good winter clothing is therefore essential to stay comfortable and focused. Start with a layer of thermal clothing that traps your body heat and wicks away sweat. Over this, wear insulating layers, such as a warm sweater or fleece, and as an outer layer, a water- and windproof motorcycle jacket and pants.
Your hands and feet are extra sensitive to cold, so make sure you have insulated gloves and thermal socks. For your feet, waterproof motorcycle boots are essential. Also consider a balaclava or buff to keep your neck and face warm. And don't forget grip warmers if you're going on longer rides, a small investment that makes a big difference.
Oil change
The winter months require extra attention not only to your riding style and clothing, but also to the maintenance of your engine. Low temperatures affect the performance of your engine oil. Older or contaminated oil can thicken in the cold, making lubrication of your engine parts difficult. This leads to extra wear and a less smooth ride.
Before you hit the road in winter, it is wise to change your oil or at least check the oil level and quality.

Drop brackets
Crash guards are a smart investment, especially during the winter season. They not only protect your bike, but also your wallet by preventing expensive repairs if your bike falls over or you lose grip.
Crash guards are made of sturdy metal and designed to protect the vulnerable parts of your bike, such as the engine block and fairing, from damage. Although you hope never to need them, it gives you peace of mind to know that your bike is more resistant to a slide. Plus, crash bars often look cool and give your bike a rugged look.
