The speed you feel, the road that stretches before you and that sense of freedom no car ride can match-motorcycling is more than just a mode of transportation for many. It's a lifestyle. But before you can take your dream ride, the adventure begins with motorcycle riding lessons. Whether you're still getting your bearings or already ready to take the first step: proper preparation makes all the difference. From choosing the right motorcycle school to what you need for your first lesson and tips to pass your practical exam. Here's how to start your first motorcycle driving lesson with confidence.
How to choose the right motorcycle driving school?
Choosing a good motorcycle driving school is perhaps the most important step in getting your license. But how do you know which riding school is right for you? Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Check pass rates: A good indication of the quality of a motorcycle driving school is the success rate. You can easily find this on the CBR website. The higher the percentage, the more likely you will be well prepared for the exam.
- Read experiences of others: Reviews and experiences from other students often give an honest picture of the driving school. Pay particular attention to comments about the instructors and how the lessons are structured.
- Ask for a trial lesson: Most motorcycle riding schools offer a trial lesson. This is your chance to find out if the atmosphere and instructor suit you. Does it feel right and do you get clear explanations? Then you're probably in the right place.
- Look at flexibility: Pay attention to whether you can easily schedule lessons. If you have a busy schedule, it's nice if the driving school is flexible with times.
- Note the type of motors: Modern and well-maintained motorcycles can greatly enhance your riding experience. Some riding schools have different types of motorcycles so you can practice on what suits you.
So choosing a driving school is more than just paying attention to price. It's about the total picture: a good click, clear communication and an instructor who understands your learning process.
Cost of motorcycle driving lessons
Taking motorcycle driving lessons is an investment. It's good to know in advance where you stand. The cost of motorcycle driving lessons can vary from one motorcycle driving school to another, but there are a number of factors to consider:
- Cost per single lesson: A single motorcycle driving lesson costs on average between €40 and €60 per hour, depending on the region and the driving school.
- Learning packages: Many motorcycle driving schools offer multi-lesson packages that include the practical test vehicle control (AVB) and traffic participation (AVD). Such a package is often cheaper than single lessons, with prices ranging between €800 and €1,500, depending on the number of lessons and exactly what is included.
- Examination fees: The AVB (vehicle control) exam costs an average of €80 to €100, while the AVD (traffic participation) exam is around €250. Don't forget that there is also a cost for the theory exam, which is usually around €50.
- Additional costs: Some riding schools charge extra for protective gear or helmet rental if you don't already have your own. Fuel costs may also sometimes be charged separately.
Tip: Cheap is not always better. A slightly more expensive motorcycle driving school with experienced instructors can end up saving you time AND money because you need fewer lessons to succeed.
What do you need for your first motorcycle driving lesson?
Your first motorcycle driving lesson is exciting and fun at the same time! But before you can hit the road, there are a few things you need to take care of and bring with you:
- Theory Certificate: For your first lesson on public roads, you need a valid theory certificate, unless you are practicing in an enclosed area. So start learning on time so you are prepared.
- Valid ID: Bring your ID or driver's license, as you will not be allowed to start without it.
- Protective clothing: Safety comes first. A motorcycle suit, sturdy motorcycle boots, gloves and a helmet are mandatory. Don't have this yourself yet? Many riding schools have these items available for your first lessons. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes if your own boots are still missing.
- Helmet: Most riding schools offer a helmet, but it is nice to eventually have your own for comfort and hygiene.
Tip: Wear comfortable clothes under your motorcycle suit and put on socks that are high enough so they don't sink into your boots. That rides a lot nicer!
On average, how many motorcycle riding lessons do you need?
On average, novice motorcyclists have between 15 and 25 lessons needed to get their motorcycle license. Exactly how many motorcycle driving lessons you need depends on several factors:
- Driving experience: If you have a lot of experience with scooter -or car driving, you are already used to traffic. This can cause you to take less time to develop traffic insight, for example.
- Frequency of classes: The more often you take lessons, the faster you will progress. Taking classes once a week is fine, but if you can take classes several times a week, your rhythm will be faster.
- Personal aptitude: Some people feel comfortable on the motorcycle after just a few lessons, while others need a little longer to feel confident. And that's totally fine!
- Type of motorcycle license: For the A1 driver's license (light motorcycle), you are often ready sooner than for the full A license, where you ride a heavier motorcycle.
Tip: Don't be discouraged if you need more lessons than the average. The important thing is that you are confident and safe on the road. Plus, every extra lesson means you'll be even more confident on the bike later!
What motorcycle licenses exist?
If you want to get your motorcycle license, it is useful to know that there are different categories. The type of license you can get depends on your age and the power of the motorcycle.
Driving license A1 (light motorcycle)
- Age: lessons from 17 years old, exam from 18 years old
- Power: maximum 125 cc and 11 kW (15 hp)
Driving license A2 (medium motorcycle)
- Age: lessons from 19 years old, exam from 20 years old
- Power: maximum 35 kW (47.5 hp)
Driving license A (heavy motorcycle)
- Age: 21 years via step-up scheme, 24 years for direct access
- Power: unlimited
The boarding arrangement: If you get your A1 or A2 license first, you can advance to the A license via an abbreviated route.
Tips for the practical motorcycle exam
- Vehicle control (AVB) - Practice special operations: During the AVB exam, you will be tested on your control of the motorcycle. Consider exercises such as the slow slalom and emergency stop.
- Traffic Participation (AVD) - Drive calmly and confidently: The AVD exam is all about how you participate in traffic. Stay alert and look well ahead.
- Sleep well and make sure you relax: A good night's sleep helps you stay focused. Arrive on time and make sure you are relaxed.
- Take a test drive on exam day: Many driving schools schedule a lesson right before your exam. This helps to keep your nerves under control and get into the right flow.
- Wear proper equipment: Make sure you comply with the CBR's dress code. These are tightened in 2024. Wear an approved helmet, protective motorcycle jacket and pants with CE-certified protectors, sturdy ankle-covering shoes, and gloves. Unsuitable clothing may result in disqualification. Check the CBR website for more information.
Remember: A mistake does not have to mean an immediate failure. Stay calm and stay in control.
